On February 3rd, St. John's Parish Day School celebrated World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) – a day that highlights the importance of reading aloud and sharing stories. To observe this important global initiative, our students enjoyed listening to their teacher read or they took turns reading aloud to their class. Additionally, we are fortunate to have four of our Lower School students – Arjun, Benjamin, Charlie, and Jasmine – participate in Kenya Connect’s joint reading videos, which features children in Kenya, Canada, and the U.S. reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Sulwe by Lupita Nyong'o. Our students enjoyed watching these read-aloud videos in class and some also read the physical books. Several classes of students in Wamunyu, Kenya enjoyed watching the videos too! It is so wonderful to connect children across the globe through the power of a story!
We invite families to watch the joint reading videos below and/or to spend time reading stories together in celebration of WRAD as this is one day that parents and children can celebrate every day!
Watch the reading of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind featuring Arjun in First Grade.
Watch the reading of Sulwe featuring Jasmine (Second Grade), Benjamin (Kindergarten), & Charlie (Kindergarten).
