Alumni Spotlight: Sophia Martinez'14

We are so very excited to spotlight one of our esteemed alums, Sophia Martinez!

Congratulations to the Martinez family on their new children's book titled "Shine Bright: Tales of Sadie the Firefly": an inspiring tale about a brave firefly who learns to overcome her fears in life. The book is illustrated by SJPDS alumna, Sophia Martinez '14, and written by her mom, Katie. They were inspired to create the book during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way of sharing the importance of perseverance, overcoming fears, and the strength that you get from family. The book was also a joint project for them to work on together before Sophia goes away to college.

While at St. John’s, Sophia was encouraged to pursue her artistic talents and she gives special thanks to Mrs. Rose, retired Lower School Art Teacher, with whom Sophia got her start in art. One of Sophia’s favorite St. John’s projects was creating her own book that she got to present to the class moms on Mother’s Day. These experiences helped prepare Sophia for illustrating "Shine Bright: Tales of Sadie the Firefly”.

Sophia is currently a senior at McDonogh School and will graduate in June 2021. While she will always focus on her drawing and painting, she hopes to one day pursue a career in the military. She celebrates acceptance into the Corps of Cadets of both the Senior Military Colleges she applied to - The Citadel (SC) and Norwich (VT). We are so proud of Sophia and wish her continued success! Go Alumna, Bears!

Readers who wish to experience this delightful work can purchase “Shine Bright: Tales of Sadie the Firefly” on AmazonBarnes & Noble, and bookstores everywhere.
